Details of the center's Community College ProgramWCBST is partnering with the Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute (TVI) in Albuquerque, New Mexico and focusing on developing a biophotonics option within their well-established Photonics Technology program. A two-semester sequence of courses on “Biophotonics” to be offered beginning in Spring 2005 and the biophotonics-related curriculum will serve as a template for other community colleges in Northern California. We are working on a mechanism for some TVI students to transfer to UC Davis. In addition, initial discussions with the TVI photonics program have opened the possibility of similar interactions with TVI programs in biotechnology and health occupations (e.g., nursing). Goals- Partner with community colleges - sources of well-trained technicians for the emerging field of biophotonics.
- Encourage community college students to transfer to UC Davis (and our four-year partner institutions).
Target AudienceAlbuquerque Technical Vocational Institute (TVI) is a progressive community college that promotes and provides higher education, skill development and workforce training relevant to contemporary needs. TVI’s Photonics Academy modeled after the school’s Advanced Manufacturing Academy continues to be a national leader and is carried out in close collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories as part of the “Albuquerque Model” that involves photonics education from the level of middle schools in the Albuquerque area on through a Ph.D. program at the University of New Mexico.
